Secrets of Happy Retirement Life

Speed-Interval Walking

Recently I read about speed-interval walking and actually saw an elderly man doing it.

According to the article you walk fast for 3 minutes and then walk leisurely for 3 minutes for the total of 30 minutes a day, 4 times a week. After 4 weeks your physical age will be 10 years younger.

This sounded so good, I tried it the next day, carrying a timer. But then I found out how tough it was to walk fast for 3 minutes. It was shocking!

The thing was, I had been more or less cooped up in the house for some time without doing much walking. So I began to take a walk more often and did a kind of mock speed-interval walking ? not minding the particulars.

In the meantime I came across various methods of speed-interval walking on the internet. What I found out was that the only important thing about this exercise was to keep doing it. Whatever the way you do, keep at it!

Since my sister suffers from lower back pain, we don’t walk fast when we go out together. The fact that for one outing we walk about 3,000 to 5,000 steps seems to be good enough. We enjoy the sun, blue skies, and fresh air, which put together do us a lot of good mentally as well as physically.
